example usage 1

To plate on plastic using Spa Plating’s plastic plating process, first lightly spray the item with clear lacquer, apply our Conductive Ink, plate with our PP Copper and then, if you’re intending to finish with a layer of gold plate, you’ll need to plate a barrier layer of either silver (which is included in the kit) nickel, palladium or white bronze. This is an outline and for further and essential guidance on this process, please see our Electroplating Manual by clicking HERE and by following the links to our videos which can be found on the tab marked ‘Watch our Video’ on this tabbed panel. This kit (or any of our other kits, equipment or solutions) is not suitable for plating on to aluminium or titanium and therefore can’t be used to plate iPhones and other similar products.

example usage 2

This is a detail of a gold plated ostrich made from non-conductive reinforced resin which was used in an eye-catching window display for a Bond Street shop in London, UK. The ostrich was life sized, so brush plating was the best option in this case.

Our Plastic Plating Kit isn’t just for plating on plastics but can be used for plating on wood, glass, stone and ceramics – to name just a few of its applications!

Contents Guide

A note on our kits;

Every item in our electroplating kits

  • makes an important contribution to the overall success of the plating process
  • has been thoroughly tested to ensure it performs its job at the highest level in the overall electroplating process
  • is either made in-house or has been carefully sourced from our trusted suppliers

These factors ensure consistent, top quality plating results for a fair price.

Key Kit Contents Features Used For
Conductive Ink (hi-grade) just brush on,no spraying needed. Very economical; 1 gram will coat surface area of 250cm2 – that’s roughly the equivalent of 5 golf balls. Making virtually any solid surface electrically conductive and therefore able to be plated eg. plastic, glass, wood, plaster, stone, fibre glass
PP Copper Brush Plating Solution Plates bright and quickly and effectively metalises the non-metal surface. Plating the initial layer of copper on the cured conductive ink.
Nickel Brush Plating Solution Plate to at least a 2 microns thickness.
Once plated can be abraded to produce a scratched or ‘brush’ finish.
Use a nickel electrode.
Plating a barrier layer on copper when gold plating.
Power Rectifier Fully variable voltage between 3 and 15 volts.  Maximum constant current output of 25 amps Quickly building up a substantial layer of copper plate over the conductive ink thus metalising the surface
Conductor Strips Developed specifically for this process – makes electrical contact with work without risk of damaging conductive Ink layer Dramatically increasing the surface area of electrical contact with the work and therefore speeding up plating times
Thermometer Clear, easy to read display, safe to use and takes up very little room Calibrating fan ovens to ensure the correct temperature for curing Conductive Ink
Carbon electrodes x2
Platinum electrode x 1
Carbon: Economic option.Platinum: High quality long lasting electrode – Made from platinum plated titanium

Polishing/finishing compounds

MPU One stage cleaning and activating product. Can be used during the plating process without having to re-electroclean and activate For cleaning and activating in one stage, can replace the ActiClean stage – saves time and money clearing burns or other marks produced during plating – all you have to do is rinse and carry on plating
Autosol The polish that provides the greatest degree of cut that we sell. Great for getting rid of defects in the base material and polishing back any defects in thick layers of copper plate before further layers of plate. If you intend to plate after using Autosol, you will need to go through the full cleaning process again.
MetaSeal Non-abrasiveSpecial formulation Bringing out the final lustre of your work and cuts out the hard work associated with final finishingSeals in the shine and slows tarnishing
