Great for economic, cyanide free plating of lustrous layers of silver. Easily plate items such as musical instrument parts and parts of antiques. Plating can take place at room temperature. Thicknesses of 3-5mm are achievable.
The pH of this solution needs to be controlled with Silver pH Adjuster which is a special order item.

Silver plating a cornet mouthpiece using our Silver Tank Plating Kit.
Our Mesh Electrodes fit snugly inside our Plating Beakers and completely surround the inside of the beaker, helping to ensure the plated layer is deposited evenly and quickly over the surface of the item you’re plating.
The Plating Beakers are made from heat resistant glass to avoid any possible contamination from leaching which could arise from the use of plastic plating beakers. The inside dimensions of the beaker with the mesh is; Height from base of beaker to top of mesh; 13cm – diameter 8cm.
Our Hot Plate Stirrer both maintains the silver solution at an optimum temperature and gently agitates it by stirring it gently. This helps the silver tank plating solution to deposit a smooth, shiny layer of silver evenly and quickly over the surface of the item you’re plating. The mechanical agitation also avoids the health hazards associated with breathing in mists which are created by air agitation (with fish tank air pumps). The operating temperature of the Silver Tank Plating Solution is 18-23 degrees centigrade, or room temperature. If you are plating within these parameters then you might consider reducing the price of this kit by exchanging the Hot Plate Stirrer with the Magnetic Stirrer.

This kit (or any of our other kits, equipment or solutions) is not suitable for plating on to aluminium or titanium and therefore can’t be used to plate iPhones and other similar products. If you are planning on silver tank plating on to copper and its alloys including brass and bronze you’ll need to brush plate a barrier layer of gold flash to protect your tank plating solution.

Cornet mouthpiece after tank plating in our Silver Plating Solution. Depending on the age of your solution, the plate may need buffing to reveal the high shine and to remove any yellowing.

The Plating Stand, Arm and Boss allows you to position your work in the Plating Beakers at just the right height and means you can quickly move items in and out of the plating solution. It is also electrically connected to the rectifier as there is a negative port at the base of the stand where you plug in your black lead. This cuts down on trailing leads and helps to keep your work area tidy and well organised.

Before electrocleaning in our Cleaner the surface of the cornet mouthpiece repels water, forming droplets and rivulets. This shows that the surface is still dirty and not suitable for top quality plating.

After electrocleaning in our Cleaner, the water runs off the surface of the cornet mouthpiece in an unbroken sheet, showing it is perfectly clean and the optimum surface for plating. If you want to leave your plating beaker with the plating solution in it without transferring it back into its bottle, then we recommend covering the top with some cling film. This procedure is especially important for oxygen or air sensitive solution such as silver. Just make sure that the mesh electrode tab has been re-positioned so that it doesn’t interfere with the cling film and you have an airtight seal on your beaker. To do this, slip it out from between the mesh electrode and the beaker wall and re-insert it, making sure that it’s pushed down and not sticking up beyond the beaker rim.

All tank plating solutions need the occasional filter to keep them in good working order and this kit includes one of filter kits to keep your solution working at its optimum level.

For example, if you are using the 250ml plating beaker your work piece can’t at any point in its width, exceed 44mm and can’t at any point be longer than 70mm.

Kit customisation

A key feature of our kits is the flexibility to be customise them by removing items you don’t need or adding extra items from our product range. For example, you may already own a hot plate stirrer, or you may want to you downsize or upsize the plating beaker according to the dimensions of the items you wish to plate. The table below will help you do this.

The advertised kit is the 250ml kit. If you want to upsize to the 1 litre kit, you will need to remove the 250ml Plating Beaker, Mesh Electrode for 250ml Beaker, Stirring Bar (Mini) and 250ml of Silver Tank Plating Solution from the kit list.
You will then need to add the 1 Litre Plating Beaker, Mesh Electrode for 1 Litre Beaker, Stirring Bar (Medium) and 1 Litre of Silver Tank Plating Solution.

Silver tank plating a brass cornet mouthpiece

You can handle Spa Plating’s silver plating solution with complete peace of mind, as it’s cyanide free.
This project will show you how to silver tank plate on brass using a brass trumpet mouthpiece for demonstration purposes, one of the many applications that are possible with our silver solution and tank plating kit.

1. Working out the amps and the plating time for the silver plating

a) Decide how thick you require your plated layer to be. In this example, we wanted the plated layer of silver to be 5 microns.

b) Work out the approximate surface area of your work. The surface of this trumpet mouthpiece is about 36cm2

c) Multiply the surface area of the item by the solution factor for silver, which is 0.005 For our trumpet mouthpiece, this came out at 36 x 0.005 = 0.18, so the plating amps need to be set to 0.18

d) The silver tank plating solution plates at a rate of 0.3 microns per minute. So, to find out how long to leave the item in the solution, divide the required thickness (in this case 5 microns) by 0.3 This gives a plating time for the trumpet mouthpiece of 17 minutes.

NB As soon as you have worked out the correct time, enter this into the plating timer so that you’re ready to go when you start plating.


2.Setting up your kit and working out the amps for the powered cleaning stage

Set up the kit as shown in the photograph. To work out the amp setting for this stage, multiply the surface area of the piece by the solution factor for Cleaner, which is 0.1

So for this project, the amp setting for the powered cleaning stage is 36cm2 x 0.1 = 3.6

3. Surface preparation with MPU

First, polish off all traces of the old silver plate and then make sure the surface of your work is perfectly clean by rubbing with undiluted washing up liquid, rinsing thoroughly under running water and rubbing with our MPU.

4. Ultrasonic cleaning

Next, place the work in the Ultrasonic Cleaner and leave it in for a minute or so.

Lift it out of the ultrasonic and pass it through the first two rinse stages.

5. Powered cleaning

Fix your work in the Cleaner tank and as soon as you have lowered the item into the solution, set the rectifier to the correct amp level. Almost immediately you should see bubbles form on the surface of the solution, which shows that it is working properly. We left the mouthpiece in for at least 4-5 minutes. Once finished, pass it through the next two rinse stages.

6. Silver Plating 0.18 amps for 17 minutes

Fix your work in the crocodile clip on the plating arm and lower the work into the silver plating solution.

As soon as possible after lowering your work into the silver plating solution, adjust the rectifier to the level of amps previously calculated and start the plating timer.

7. Final rinses

Once the plating time is up, remove your work and pass it through the final two rinse stage.

8. Finishing

To bring out the lustre in your silver plate, we recommend polishing with Goddard’s Silver Polish. This can be purchased from our online shop and is included in our Hand Polishing Kit.

9. Short term storage of your solution

If you’re planning to use your silver solution over the next few days, you can cover the top of your plating beaker with cling film.
